Part of Israel's ongoing "Holyland Cities" commemorative series, this 1998 issue was struck specifically to mark the 50th anniversary of Israeli independence — a jubilee that prompted the Bank of Israel to authorize an unusually broad slate of silver collector coins that year. The pomegranate motif draws from ancient Israelite symbolism attested in archaeological finds at sites including Megiddo, and a carved ivory pomegranate long believed to be the sole surviving artifact from Solomon's Temple was later determined by the Israel Antiquities Authority to bear a forged inscription.
