Akko (Acre) had been a Crusader stronghold, an Ottoman port, and the city where Napoleon suffered his only major siege defeat in 1799 — stopped by a combination of Ottoman resistance and a British naval squadron under Sir Sidney Smith. This coin is part of Israel's ongoing "Cities in Israel" series, which paired archaeological and historical urban sites with commemorative silver issues throughout the 1980s.
