Obverse description Round cast copper cash coin with a central square perforation. The obverse displays four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (right), 通 (right), 平 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), the standard inscription of Joseon cash coinage. The raised characters are set within a plain inner rim bordering the central hole and a raised outer rim encircling the coin's edge. The field between the legends is recessed and shows natural casting texture.
