| Obverse description | Round cash-style coin with a square central hole. Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading order around the central perforation: 常 (Sang) at top, 平 (Pyong) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bo) at left. Together, the top-bottom pair reads 常平 (Sangpyong), referring to the Joseon government agency Sangpyeong-cheong (the Ever-Normal Office), and the right-left pair reads 通寶 (Tongbo), meaning 'circulating treasure' or currency. Characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and cast in relief against a plain field. |
