| Obverse description | The obverse features four Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform pattern around a central square hole. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常 and 平 (Sang-pyong) flank the hole vertically, denoting the Sangpyeong Office, the government agency responsible for coin issuance during the Joseon Dynasty. Reading right to left, the characters 通 and 寶 (Tong-bo) flank the hole horizontally, forming the classic phrase meaning 'circulating currency.' The inscription is rendered in traditional regular script (kaishu), cast in relief against a plain field, following the centuries-old East Asian cash coin convention. |
