Obverse description Four Chinese characters arranged around a central square perforation in the traditional cash coin format. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying the issuing authority as the Sangpyeongcheong (Office of Ever-Normal Treasury) and denoting the coin as standard currency. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and occupy the four cardinal positions around the central hole, with 常 at top, 平 at bottom, 通 at right, and 寶 at left. The flat, unadorned field is typical of Joseon Dynasty cast bronze coinage.
