Obverse description Cast brass cash coin featuring four Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform pattern around a central square hole. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常平 (Sangpyeong) identify the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong Ever-Normal Office, the issuing administrative authority. Reading right to left, the characters 通寶 (Tongbo) signify 'current currency' or 'circulating treasure.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in low relief against a flat field, with plain inner and outer rims framing the inscription.
