Obverse description Four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform orientation around the central square hole, reading in two pairs: 常平 (Sangpyeong, right to left across the top and bottom) and 通寶 (Tongbo, top to bottom on the vertical axis), together forming the legend 常平通寶, identifying the coin as currency of the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) monetary system. The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) style, cast in relief within a plain field. No border ornamentation is present beyond the outer rim.

Reverse description Three Chinese ideograms arranged around the central square hole: a mint mark at the top position reading 訓 (Hun, denoting the Hullyeondogam, or Military Training Command), a series character at the bottom reading 八 (八, the numeral eight), and a Sino-Korean cyclical or elemental character at the right reading 土 (Tu, earth), identifying the casting series. The characters are cast in relief within a plain field, consistent with standard Joseon cash coin reverse conventions.
