| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within the coin field. Reading top to bottom, the characters 常平 (Sang-pyong) identify the Sangpyeong Office, the Joseon Dynasty government bureau responsible for coinage; reading right to left, the characters 通寶 (Tong-bo) denote the coin as standard currency. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) in a clean, formal style typical of Joseon cast coinage. |
