| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain circular field. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner, the inscription reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), identifying the coin as currency of the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal Treasury), the principal fiscal bureau of the Joseon Dynasty. The characters are rendered in standard regular script (kaishu) with well-defined strokes typical of cast bronze cash coinage. The field between the characters and the outer rim is plain and unadorned. |
