| Additional information |
Issued by the village authority of Akiyama-mura in the immediate aftermath of the Boshin War, this wooden token belongs to a chaotic transitional moment when the new Meiji government had not yet established reliable coinage supply across rural Japan. Local authorities and merchants in remote areas frequently issued their own emergency scrip — wood, paper, and ceramic all served — to keep commerce moving when metal coin was absent or hoarded. Fukushima domain had been on the losing side of the conflict, which compounded the disruption to normal monetary circulation in the region.
