Obverse description Round cast copper coin with a square central hole, surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in the four cardinal positions around the aperture. Reading clockwise from the top: 箱 (Hako), 通 (tsū), 館 (date/kan), 寶 (hō/bō), forming the legend 箱館通寶 (Hakodate Tsūhō). The characters are rendered in a bold, slightly archaic clerical script typical of Edo-period cast coinage, set within a plain raised rim on both obverse and reverse.
