Obverse description Cast iron cash-type coin with a central circular perforation. Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order around the central hole within a plain inner rim, reading clockwise from top: 箱 (Hako), 通 (tsū), 館 (date), 寶 (hō), collectively forming the mint name and currency denomination 'Hakodate-tsūhō'. The characters are rendered in a bold, slightly irregular brush-script style typical of Edo-period cast coinage. The flat field shows natural casting texture with no additional decorative elements.

Reverse description Plain, nearly featureless reverse with a central circular perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim and a raised outer rim. A single Chinese character 安 (An, abbreviation for the Ansei era) is faintly cast above the central hole, serving as an era marker to indicate the period of issue. The surrounding field is otherwise blank, with a rough, pitted surface characteristic of iron cast coinage of the late Edo period.
