Obverse description Round hammered gold flan with a central square hole. Four large Chinese characters in kaisho (block) script are arranged in cruciform fashion around the square perforation, reading clockwise from top: 永 (Ei), 通 (tsū), 樂 (raku), 寶 (hō), collectively forming the four-character legend 永樂通寶 (Eiraku Tsūhō, meaning 'Eiraku Currency'). The characters are boldly rendered in high relief, filling the broad flat field between the central aperture and the plain raised rim.
