| Reverse description | The reverse features a large numeral '1' in the left field beside a seated figure of a young woman writing in a book or on paper, symbolizing literacy and education — a key theme of post-independence Mozambican coinage. The figure is rendered in a naturalistic style and is seated on a low bench facing right. A horizontal line separates the central design from the legend below. The denomination legend METICAL arcs along the lower periphery in bold Latin capitals. A decorative scalloped border frames the entire reverse design. |

| Additional information |
Mozambique's first domestic coinage appeared in 1975 following independence from Portugal, but the 1 Metical series issued from 1980 reflects the country's early years under Frelimo's Marxist-Leninist government — a period when the state was simultaneously nationalizing industry and fighting a destabilization campaign by Renamo, largely backed by apartheid South Africa. Coinage production was a deliberate act of economic infrastructure under active threat.
