Obverse description Bearded effigy of Emperor Hailé Selassié I facing right, wearing an elaborate ornate imperial crown. The portrait is rendered in moderate relief with fine detail on the crown's intricate latticed and jewelled band. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy along the border, with the denomination and Ethiopian calendar date inscribed in the lower field. The coin is bordered by a raised beaded rim.

Reverse description The Conquering Lion of Judah passant right, wearing a small imperial crown, with its raised right forepaw resting on a staff from which a ribboned cross flies. The lion is depicted in bold relief with a flowing mane, its long tail curling upward behind it. A Ge'ez legend occupies the upper field, encircling the design along the beaded rim, while the Arabic numeral '1' appears in the lower exergue. The overall composition evokes the traditional Ethiopian royal symbol.
