Bhuvanaikabahu I founded the Dambadeniya kingdom after the Chola invasions had shattered the old Polonnaruwa polity, relocating the Sinhalese royal center inland to a fortified rock site. His reign saw a conscious effort to reassert Buddhist kingship and administrative coherence after generations of disruption. The massa denomination itself belongs to a weight standard with roots in the older Sinhalese ridi massa system, though copper issues of this period reflect the degraded economic conditions following prolonged foreign occupation and the collapse of the northern irrigation civilization.
