| Obverse description | Two standing figures face the viewer side by side within the coin's field: at left, the Livonian Master in armour bearing a cross-emblazoned shield and wearing a helmet, and at right, the Archbishop of Riga in ecclesiastical vestments likewise bearing a cross-ornamented shield, together symbolising the joint authority of the two issuing powers. Between and below the figures a single combined heraldic shield is displayed. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial characters reads MO · NO · ARCHIEPI · RIGENS · ET · MAGISTRI · LIVON ·, abbreviated for Moneta Nova Archiepiscopus Rigensis Et Magistri Livoniae, denoting this as the new coinage of the Archbishop of Riga and the Master of Livonia. The composition is rendered in the flat, linear hammered style characteristic of early sixteenth-century Baltic coinage. |
