Hamburg's 1921 Kultur und Sportwoche notgeld was issued specifically to commemorate a municipal cultural and sports festival — one of several German cities that used the postwar notgeld phenomenon not merely to address coin shortages but as a deliberate promotional exercise. The City of Hamburg contracted Coutinho u. Meyer, a local Hamburg printer, keeping the entire production within the city.

The watermarked paper is notable for a notgeld of this type. Most festival-issue emergency currency of the period skipped security features entirely, treating the notes as collectibles from the outset rather than instruments anyone expected to redeem.
