Additional information

Christian V's monetary reforms of the 1670s and 1680s restructured Danish-Norwegian coinage along rationalized lines, partly to fund the ongoing costs of rebuilding royal authority after the 1660 constitutional revolution that had abolished the nobility's tax privileges. The 1686 issue falls within a productive run from the Copenhagen mint under mint master Heinrich Schau, whose tenure saw consistent output but also documented disputes over silver fineness that periodically drew royal scrutiny.

The .672 fine standard was a deliberate compromise — leaner than earlier mark coinage but defensible against debasement accusations in Baltic trade, where Danish currency faced stiff competition from the riksdaler.
