| Obverse description | Cream-toned note with a decorative geometric border of interlocking angular patterns running the full perimeter. The central vignette is framed by a large diamond-shaped guilloche surround enclosing an oval cartouche, flanked on each side by square rosette medallions. Denomination numerals "1" appear in the upper corners, with the word "Mark" rendered in bold blackletter script at the lower left and right. Within the oval cartouche, the issuing authority, date of issue (Buchau, den 23. Juni 1921), and three manuscript signatures of the Vorsitzender, Kassier, and Schriftführer are inscribed, along with a notice that the note is dedicated to collectors and not intended for circulation. A serial number appears at the foot of the note. |

Buchau am Federsee is a small town in Upper Swabia whose notable claim is the Federsee — a shallow glacial lake and prehistoric settlement site of considerable archaeological importance. The issuer here, the local antiquities and homeland studies association, was issuing its own notgeld, which is unusual: most municipal notgeld came from town councils, savings banks, or chambers of commerce. A cultural society printing circulating scrip in 1921 suggests either a fundraising angle or a gap in local banking infrastructure that the association stepped in to fill.
The DeNG 1#197.1-3/6 reference indicates at least six varieties in the series, pointing to a more deliberate issue than a simple stopgap measure.
