Obverse description The obverse is printed in blue, black, and ochre tones, with a decorative cartouche framing a central vignette of a traveling merchant carrying a large pack on his back, a pipe in hand and a walking staff, rendered in a folk-art lithographic style. Behind the figure, a sailing ship and a Gothic cathedral skyline are visible in the background. The denomination "Eine Mark" is inscribed in large Gothic script to the left and right of the vignette, with "WINTERBERG i.W." arched across the top, two manuscript signatures of the Magistrat below, and a humorous verse referencing Columbus at the foot of the design.
Obverse lettering WINTERBERG i.W.

Winterberg's municipal Magistrat issued this 1 Mark note as Notgeld — emergency local currency — almost certainly during the acute coin shortage of 1917–1918 that forced hundreds of German towns to print their own small-denomination paper. The designer credit "Thormaun" appears to be a local attribution, possibly a civic official or minor commercial artist rather than a professional printer's engraver.

Municipal issues from small Sauerland towns like Winterberg were typically printed in very limited runs and redeemed quickly, which makes survivors genuinely uncommon rather than artificially scarce.
