Klodnitz — today Kłodnica, a village on the outskirts of Gliwice — issued this note during the Upper Silesian plebiscite period, when the region's political future was being fought over by Germany and the newly reconstituted Polish state. Municipal Notgeld from villages of this size was rarely printed in large quantities, and much of it was redeemed or destroyed once the plebiscite machinery wound down after the March 1921 vote.
Grass, Barth & Comp. (operating under the W. Friedrich imprint) handled a substantial volume of Silesian municipal emergency currency during this period, working out of Breslau at a time when that city itself was anxiously watching the plebiscite outcome.
