Freienohl is a small village on the Ruhr river in the Sauerland, and its municipality issued notgeld like hundreds of similarly obscure Westphalian communities during the post-WWI currency emergency. These local authority issues were a direct consequence of the Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate small denomination coinage and notes to the provinces — metal had been stripped for war production, and the central supply chain had simply collapsed.

Gemeindekasse issues — literally the municipal cash office — carried real legal tender status within their issuing district, which distinguished them from the purely decorative collector notgeld that flooded the market from 1920 onward.
