Bialla was a small town in the Masovian Lake District of East Prussia — today Biała Piska in northeastern Poland. This 1 Mark Notgeld dates to the period of acute small-change shortage that gripped German municipalities after the First World War, forcing hundreds of local authorities to issue their own emergency fractional currency. Carl Flemming & T. C. Wiskott in Glogau handled an enormous volume of such commissions across the region, and the watermarked paper here is an unusually deliberate security measure for a note of this denomination and origin.
