| Obverse description | Cream-yellow ground with decorative foliate corner ornaments in a Jugendstil style, printed in brown, red, and green. A central circular vignette on a green ground renders a sheaf of wheat bound with a ribbon scroll inscribed 'Unser täglich Brot gib uns heute!', with a cartwheel at its base and a field of flowers beyond. The denomination '1 Mark' appears in large Gothic script flanking the vignette on both left and right, with the city name 'Stadt Lügde' arching across the upper field; the lower panel carries the payment obligation text, the issuing authority 'Sparkasse der Stadt Lügde', the date 'Lügde, den 16. Lügde is a small spa town in the Weser Uplands, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1921, it issued its own notgeld to compensate for the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage following the First World War. What distinguishes this particular piece is the local designer credit — Fr. Drewes of Lügde — which was unusual for notgeld of this scale. Most towns of comparable size simply ordered stock or semi-stock designs from their printer. That König & Ebhardt handled the job is unremarkable; the Hannover firm was one of the busiest notgeld printers in Lower Saxony during this period.
