Bückeburg was the capital of the tiny state of Schaumburg-Lippe, one of the smallest German principalities to survive into the Weimar period. This note is Notgeld — emergency municipal currency printed to address the catastrophic small-denomination coin shortage that gripped Germany through the early 1920s as metal hoarding and inflation hollowed out everyday commerce. Hundreds of German towns commissioned their own issues, and H.M. Hauschild in Bremen was among the more prolific printers serving that market.

Schaumburg-Lippe itself ceased to exist as a sovereign state in 1918; by 1921, Bückeburg was issuing this note as a city administration, not a ruling house.
