Rothenburg ob der Tauber's Stadtkasse was among hundreds of German municipal treasuries forced into emergency currency issuance during the inflationary spiral of the early Weimar period, when Reichsbank notes of small denomination effectively vanished from circulation through hoarding and commodity price acceleration. The 1921 series was locally administered but the printing quantity — over twelve million pieces — reflects just how acute the small-change shortage had become in even modestly sized Franconian towns.
Adolf Hosse was a Rothenburg-based artist closely associated with the town's medievalist identity, and his involvement gives this note an unusually coherent regional character rare among Notgeld of this volume.
