Augustenburg — Augustenborg in Danish — sits on the island of Als, territory whose political status was contested for much of the nineteenth century and not definitively settled until the 1920 Schleswig plebiscite returned North Schleswig to Denmark. This note predates that transfer, issued while the region was still under German administration in the immediate postwar period. The Fleckenskasse — literally the town's local cash office — operated as a de facto municipal issuer when small change collapsed out of circulation across Germany in 1920.
The DeNG reference distinguishes two subtypes (54.1–2), most likely differentiated by serial number range or minor printing variation rather than separate issue dates.
