Baden-Baden's municipal authority issued this notgeld in 1918 as the wartime metal shortage made small-denomination coinage effectively disappear from circulation. Thousands of German towns did the same, but the Stadtgemeinde here moved early and printed locally — the note was redeemable at the municipal treasury rather than through any banking intermediary.
Series redemption was tied to postwar currency stabilization, and most low-denomination municipal notgeld was withdrawn and pulped by the early 1920s before hyperinflation made the question moot entirely.
