Obverse description Central field displays the Hamburg castle arms — a three-towered fortified gateway with open portcullis — set within an ornate baroque cartouche of scrolling foliage and floral sprays. Above the castle, a small imperial eagle with spread wings surmounts the design. The mintmaster's initials IR and the date 1694 appear in a cartouche at the base of the design. The circular legend HAMBURGER STADT GELDT runs around the periphery, bounded by a beaded border.
