Reverse description Frontal depiction of the crowned Virgin Mary as Madonna, seated and holding the Christ Child, surrounded by a mandorla of radiating flaming rays. The figures are rendered in the Gothic-Renaissance transitional style common to North German coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend encircles the central device, invoking Maria as the Mother of Jesus, with the date of issue incorporated at the conclusion of the legend. The reverse type is characteristic of Mariengroschen coinage, whose name derives directly from this Marian imagery.
