The figures are rendered in the Gothic-Renaissance transitional style common to North German coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend encircles the central device, invoking Maria as the Mother of Jesus, with the date of issue incorporated at the conclusion of the legend. The reverse type is characteristic of Mariengroschen coinage, whose name derives directly from this Marian imagery. |
