| Reverse description | The Virgin Mary stands facing, crowned, in long flowing robes, holding the Christ Child before her with both hands. Radiating flames or rays emanate from her figure, filling the field on either side in a mandorla-like arrangement typical of late medieval Marian iconography. The circumferential legend MARIA MATER SAL(vatoris) is inscribed in Gothic lettering within a beaded border, identifying the Virgin as the Mother of the Saviour. The year of issue, where present, appears integrated within the legend. The overall style reflects the provincial German hammered coinage tradition of the early sixteenth century. |
