Miguel I's claim to the Portuguese throne — and by extension its colonial territories — was contested from the moment he seized power in 1828, triggering the Liberal Wars against his niece Maria II. Pattern coinage for Angola from 1831 sits squarely in that instability: these pieces were struck during a period when Miguel's government was actively trying to consolidate legitimacy across the empire, including its African possessions, yet his reign collapsed entirely by 1834 when he was forced into exile at Genoa.
