| Reverse description | Reverse of the host coin displays the denomination legend MACUTA 1/2 and the date (1785 or 1786) within a beaded border, with the circular legend AFRICA·PORTUGUEZA surrounding the field. Prominently applied at centre is the crowned Portuguese royal shield countermark, struck per the Edict of 21 March 1837, which officially doubled the face value of the host coin from 1/2 Macuta to 1 Macuta. The countermark depicts the Portuguese coat of arms — an escutcheon charged with the five quinas (inescutcheons) arranged in a cross, surmounted by a royal crown — deeply impressed into the copper flan, with the legends of the host coin remaining legible around it. |
