Obverse description The obverse displays the original legends of the host coin, a 1789-dated 1/2 Macuta issued under Queen Maria I of Portugal. The circular field bears the legend MARIA·I·D·G·REGINAE·PORT·ET·D·GUINEÆ· running along the periphery, referencing the queen's titles in Latin. At the center, the crowned Portuguese royal arms countermark applied under the Edict of 21 March 1837 is prominently struck, revaluing the host coin to 1 Macuta. The countermark consists of a crowned shield bearing the Portuguese coat of arms, punched into the original design. The coin shows typical wear consistent with its circulation history and the superimposition of the countermark punch.
