| Obverse description | Central device features the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the five quinas (escutcheons of Portugal) and the castle of Castile, superimposed on an armillary sphere representing the overseas empire — all surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The crowned arms are rendered in bold relief against a plain field. A continuous circular legend in Latin reads MARIA·I·E·PETRUS·III·D·G·REGENTES·P·E·D·GUINEÆ·, identifying the joint regents Maria I and Pedro III, by the grace of God, regents of Portugal and Guinea. The coin's milled border frames the design with a fine toothed rim. |
