| Obverse description | Uniformed effigy of King Moshoeshoe II facing one-quarter left, depicted in full military dress uniform with epaulettes, decorations, and a peaked cap. The portrait occupies the central field against a mirror-polished proof background. The circular legend around the periphery reads KINGDOM OF LESOTHO at the top and H.M. MOSHOESHOE II 1985 along the lower arc, separated by raised dots. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Moshoeshoe II's Silver Jubilee in 1985 marked twenty-five years since Lesotho's preparation for independence, though the king himself had a turbulent relationship with actual political power — he was twice deposed by Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan and later by military coup, spending periods in exile before his death under disputed circumstances in 1996. This commemorative was issued by a government that had effectively sidelined the monarch it was ostensibly celebrating.
