Christiania has issued its own currency intermittently since the 1970s, a direct assertion of the commune's self-declared independence from the Danish state. The 2017 series updated earlier Løn pieces and was produced in limited numbers for internal circulation — used primarily at communal businesses on Pusher Street and in the dining hall. Whether these coins ever functioned as a genuine medium of exchange or served mainly as political objects and tourist curios is a debate collectors have never fully resolved.
