Freetown Christiania, the self-declared autonomous neighborhood in Copenhagen, began issuing its own coinage in the early 2000s as a deliberate assertion of independence from Danish authority — a community that had already been resisting eviction attempts since squatters occupied the former military barracks in 1971. The "Løn" denomination exists nowhere in Danish monetary law, which was precisely the point.
