Issued to mark the 425th anniversary of Vilnius University, founded in 1579 by Stefan Batory, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, under a Jesuit charter. The university was repeatedly closed by occupying powers — suppressed by the Russian Empire in 1832 following the November Uprising, it did not reopen until 1919. That interrupted history gives the institution an outsized symbolic weight in Lithuanian national consciousness, which explains the commemorative impulse here.
Copper-nickel circulation commemoratives of this period from the Bank of Lithuania were produced in relatively modest runs and saw little actual pocket use.
