Additional information

The 1986 date places this coin squarely in the worst years of Lebanon's civil war, when the Lebanese pound was in freefall — the official rate had already diverged catastrophically from street exchange, and hyperinflationary pressure was accelerating. Banque du Liban's switch to nickel clad steel from the earlier nickel composition reflects a straightforward cost-cutting response to that economic deterioration. By this point the one-pound denomination had lost most practical purchasing value; the coin's main function was essentially symbolic.
