Mortara's Campo di Concentramento P.G. N. 146 was one of several dozen Italian prisoner-of-war camps operating under the Regio Esercito during the Second World War. Internal camp currency of this type was issued specifically to prevent prisoners from accumulating lire that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with guards — a policy common across Axis and Allied camp systems alike.
These scrip notes are among the most fragile artifacts of Italian wartime internment. Heavy handling in confined conditions, combined with paper of minimal quality, means that survivors in any reasonable state are genuinely uncommon.
