Additional information

The Mediterranean monk seal (*Monachus monachus*) was chosen for this issue as part of Turkey's broader wildlife conservation series, reflecting the animal's precarious status along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts — the global population was estimated at fewer than 700 individuals at the time of minting. Turkey hosts one of the two remaining significant breeding colonies, concentrated around the Foça Special Environmental Protection Area established in 1993.
