Additional information

Malta's 1970s silver lira series was issued partly to court collector markets abroad, generating hard currency at a time when the island's economy was navigating a delicate transition away from British financial structures following independence in 1964. The Maltese hunting dog — the Kelb tal-Fenek, a breed with documented presence on the island going back at least two millennia — was a deliberate choice to assert a distinct Maltese cultural identity on coinage.

KM#45 was struck by the Royal Mint on behalf of the Central Bank.
