Obverse description The papal coat of arms of Pope John XXIII occupies the central field, featuring the shield with the Roncalli family arms surmounted by the papal tiara and flanked by two crossed keys of Saint Peter. The circular legend around the field reads 'IOANNES XXIII PONT·MAX·' on the upper portion and the pontifical year 'AN·IV' (or 'A·IV' depending on the variety) on the lower right.
