Additional information

Guastalla was among the smallest sovereign territories in northern Italy, and its coinage history is correspondingly thin. Giuseppe Maria Gonzaga ruled as the last duke before the duchy was absorbed by Parma in 1746 — making this lira one of the final issues struck under Gonzaga authority after nearly two centuries of family rule. The extinction of the line on his death without male heirs ended the dynasty's minting prerogative entirely.
