Obverse description The arms of San Marino — a shield bearing three towers on a rocky mount — displayed at centre, surmounted by a mural crown. The shield is flanked by an ornate wreath composed of olive branches to the left and oak branches to the right, tied at the base. A ribbon scroll below the shield bears the motto LIBERTAS. The engraver's name SPERANZA appears in the lower field. The circular legend RESPVBLICA S. MARINI runs along the periphery within a dentilated border.

Reverse description The denomination numeral 1 and the word LIRA are displayed in large bold lettering at centre, with the four-digit date below, all set within an open wreath of laurel or olive branches tied at the base. The Rome Mint mark R appears in the exergue below the wreath. A dentilated border encircles the entire design.
