The Ligurian Republic was a French client state proclaimed in Genoa in June 1797 following Napoleon's reorganization of northern Italy, replacing the ancient Republic of Genoa after over eight centuries of independent existence. This coinage was among the first issued under the new government, adopting the decimal monetary system France had recently introduced — a deliberate break from Genoese monetary tradition. The republic lasted only until 1805, when Napoleon annexed it directly into France.
