Additional information

Swaziland gained independence from British protection on September 6, 1968, making Sobhuza II — who had ruled since 1921 — the head of a fully sovereign state at last. He would go on to become the longest-verified-reigning monarch in recorded history, dying in 1982 after 61 years on the throne. This gold issue was produced specifically for the independence celebration, not for circulation, and the Kingdom's tiny population and limited mint infrastructure meant the striking was contracted abroad.

Fr#1 designation confirms this as the first entry in the Swaziland gold series — a short list by any measure.
